5. Trim the endsheet using a straight edge, an X-Acto™ knife, and a self-healing mat. Place the straight edge between the text block and the endsheet, lining up the straight edge with the edge of the text block. Cut the endsheet along the straight edge.

Trim the endsheet.

6. Repeat the process on the other side of the text block.

At this point, proceed to Chapter 9, “Making the Case.”

8. Resewing

The question to ask when first examining a text block is: Is the text block solid? If the answer is “yes,” return to Chapter 7, “Preparing the Text Block.” If the answer is “no,” then chose from the following options:

• Discard the book

• Discard the book and acquire a replacement copy

• Job the book out for repair

• Resew the book in-house, by hand

If the choice of resewing has been selected, the following items are needed:

• Self-healing mat (see page 15)

• Scissors, small (see page 16)

• X-Acto™ knife (see pages 16-17)

• Glue brush (see page 19)

Supplies:

• Adhesive (see pages 23-25)

• Binder’s thread (see page 29)

• Sewing tapes or binding tapes (see page 29)

• Apron (see page 29)

• Beeswax (see page 29)

• Archival repair tape (see pages 29, 40)

• De-acidification spray (see pages 29, 42)
